This is all the info you need to think about your impact and find a more respectful way to have fun this Halloween. And before I get into this video, I want to tell you guys about my store. And if you get anything from my store take a selfie! Racist costumes?? And I wanted to stop you before you made a fool out of yourself. Every year, around this time, we have a bunch of people who want to feel a little bit ethnic for the evening, and they think that Halloween is the perfect time to do that.
I am the sort of person who likes to believe the best of people. Now, first and foremost, I wanted to say this: I have no idea why when you look at a black character, the biggest thing you take away from them is their skin color.
Blackface has a long history of pain and hurt behind it. Actually, most of these stereotypes. I was Velma for Halloween last year, everybody knew who I was, because my look and my outfit were on point.
Lightening my skin never once came to my mind, because Velma is so much more than just a nerdy white girl. You wear the costume, not the race. Look at these great cosplayers. Look at problematic-as-hell Miley Cyrus doing it right with her Little Kim costume. One of my favorite Marvel characters is Storm, and this girl did an amazing job.
A lot of Halloween costumes are manifestations of really harmful, racist stereotypes, and I can understand now how in this part in society, the context for a lot of these stereotypes is lost.
But these stereotypes do still very much affect people of color. Like I said, I like to err on the side of people just not knowing any better, so I really hope that this video stops you from buying a racist Halloween costume. Like, stop your friends. We should be over this by now. So ghouls and girls, have a good time this Halloween.

Remember me Forgot Password? What is it about pink that causes such loathing? Such unease? Especially if we consider how dull our lives would be without pink sunsets and pink champagne. Some women think letting pink anywhere near them implies that they're against female empowerment, bad feminists or, at best, weak or silly.
Well, someone in this debate is definitely being silly. Femininity is not incompatible with ambition.Parts of a simple business plan
And obstacles preventing women from reaching the top are a great deal more substantive than their color preferences. I have a 3-year-old daughter, and I hope she grows up to be a smart, kind and confident adult. Allowing a girl to wear a pink princess dress doesn't mean she will never become a member of the Supreme Court or win the Nobel Prize for physics.
Nor does it mean she's destined to live a life of wifely compliance. We have to give girls some credit. And give the poor color a break.Donate goods women in need society
It's not about making girls choose between green dinosaurs and pink princesses — it's about allowing them to feel it's perfectly acceptable to love both. My daughter loves pink tutus and sparkly tiaras just as much as she loves dinosaurs and slugs. I'm not a personal fan of the slugs and am struggling to incorporate them into a birthday partybut parents shouldn't ever have to defend their children's preferences — whatever they may be. The anti-pink movement bothers me sometimes, as it seems to subtly imply that if a girl prefers pink toys, then there is no way she can also be outgoing and self-assured.
Or if she likes princesses, then that automatically makes me her mom ambivalent to commercial forces. But such sweeping generalizations about girls and women can make these campaigners seem just as divisive as the sexist marketing techniques they denounce. And I understand that nonstop princess-themed merchandise offers a one-dimensional view of femininity. But fighting a ceaseless battle against corporate marketing, boycotting pink products, or insisting on gender-neutral child rearing are not the solutions.
Rather than making pink and girly toys obsolete, we need to start changing our attitudes toward them. Imagine that your son needs a hula hoop for a physics project, yet refuses to use the pink sparkly one from the pink aisle which is the only kind you can find. If that's where it begins — where does it end? What other things might boys feel compelled to turn away from because of their feminine connotations?
Feelings of any kind? Helping out around the house? Reversing the reputation of pink, girly, and feminine to one of power rather than weakness affects us all. It affects the future gender equality of our world. Yet I know plenty of mothers who flatly refuse to allow their daughters anything pink, anything princess-related, or any toy that is vaguely domestic or maternal because they fear it will hold girls back in some way. But responding to limitation with further limitation is not the way forward.
It's OK to be frustrated with the excessiveness of pink, princess-themed marketing, but refusing to allow toys that seem inherently "girly" can send a dangerous message: that being a girl is not good enough; that feminine expression is a source of shame. I understand that much of the anti-pink, anti-princess uproar stems from a heartfelt desire to shield all our little girls from the harsh realities of the real world, to protect them from any crushing disappointments that might arise in their future.

Because everyone does.In some of the adoption and race forums I belong to, there has been quite a bit of chatter about whether or not children should dress up as characters who are of another race. I actually wrote a post about avoiding racist costumes over at Babble spoiler alert: blackface is never okayand I articulated my thoughts on the matter of kids and racially matching costumes:.
Black girls are not relegated to being Tiana. Asian girls are not stuck being Mulan. Halloween is about dressing as a character, not about race-matching. I feel pretty confident that kids should be able to dress as characters outside their race. But then today, this happened: The JCICS posted a picture of four kids in costume, and it resulted in a firestorm of people commenting on how upset they were that an organization who advocates for international adoption would depict such blatant cultural appropriation.
What a lot of people missed was that these girls are dressed as Disney characters Mulan, Pocahontas, and Tiana and her frog. But at first glance, it certainly looks like some dressed their child as a Geisha with white-face, and another as a stereotypically Indian.
The Land of a Gazillion Adoptees wrote the following in an open letter on their facebook page:.
Dress Up The Lovely Princess
You should know that the history, culture, and identify of the kids whose lives Joint Council promotes are to be celebrated, not appropriated as a costume for Halloween or ever. Technically, these girls are dressed as characters, not as mere cultural stereotypes. But the princess characters themselves DO represent cultural stereotypes. What do you think? Do you find the photo offensive?
And what do you think about costumes and race. Should a black child be allowed to wear a blonde Rapunzel wig, or is it a negative reinforcement of white beauty standards that should be avoided? Should we steer our kids to dress up as members of their own race, or give them the freedom to explore costumes of anyone, even if it pushes against our cultural baggage as adults?
As long as they're not dressed as native americans, slaves, black faced, or tribal attire. Whatever they want to wear isn't offensive. Anyone who would get offended by a white child wearing a princess tiana costume. Possibly do not understand racist or cultural appropriation.
This photo is not offensive the kids have no racist views. We tell children they can be what they want they dont understand why everyone has such a problem with physical features. In my eyes all this cultural appropriation stuff is another form of racism and keeping humans apart. I was raised with blacks and hispanics i take part in their cultrue because their familys helped raise me with them so to me they are part of my culture my family has native american blood in our veins but we look white as a ghost lately cultural appropriation.
Has gotten out of hand and i see the way people go about it as segregating what every race can and cannot do. Their are some things that should not be done. Its funny how disney is white washed then when they try to please other cultures and then appeal to kids that want to pretend to be said character they are racist.Your account is not active.

The artist behind this blog modified 10 screen captures of Disney princesses in action and imagined what they might look like if they were from different ethnicities.
The modified Disney character illustrations make for an interesting thought experiment — how different might Sleeping Beauty have looked if Princess Aurora was of Jamaican or Argentinian ethnicity?
How might Mulan look if the same story happened in the defense of Rome or Egypt? Most of the fairy tales that we know now were taken out of their original cultural context and altered. Aladdin was originally set in China. The Frog Prince was Latin, and was altered over and over again in several countries. The pretty princesses have been having an interesting time of it. Just towards the end of last year, Adam Ellis imagined what the Disney princess roster might look like if they all had glorious, flowing beards.

At every turn, the decision seemed fraught: Let her be Elsa, and she reinforces notions of white privilege and beauty.
But let her dress as Moana, and her daughter unwittingly tokenizes a whole culture. Her daughter ultimately chose to dress as Elsa this year, and Mickey Mouse the next.
Halloween feels doomed at every stage to be a flashpoint for the debate between sensitivity and free speech. But that impulse is misplaced. They pick their idols, most often, from a place of earnest, wide-eyed, adoration. For a child, that prospect is especially meaningful. Talking about race with kids can be excruciating, but research shows it pays off. Children develop a sense of race early on, and can have subconscious associations with certain races by the time they enter primary school.
When parents avoid the topic of race, children learn to think of it as taboo. You can teach her to see Moana as a person, not a racial caricature, while also modeling respect for her people. You can show your child that when she hits a complicated racial issue like dressing up as another race, the answer is most definitely not to find comfort in her own racial lane. Not really. It transitions her original feelings of admiration for a woman of color to believing she can package, put on, and take off, a race.
What this means is that the Disney, K-Mart, warehouse, or pre-packaged costumes of Moana are great minus any skin sleeves or tattoos —they clearly replicate the look of the animated Disney character. Hair can get especially tough. The standard Moana outfit includes a long, flowing wig. You might not always be sure you made the right call, but doing the research with your daughter, asking these questions out loud, and demonstrating to her how to decide whether something is ok will go far in making her a racially sensitive human.
Matagi reminds us this should be fun. You could show them the Pacific on a map or look at some pictures online of traditional Polynesian attire. You could learn how to say hello in different Pacific languages together. Use it as an educational tool while also having fun with it.
My dad visited a costume shop and perused the princess aisle until he spotted a stock package for Rapunzel. I ask my dad now if pinning a long, blonde wig to the head of his Indian child made him uncomfortable. And you seemed more excited about the length, than the color, anyway.
